I interrupt your regularly scheduled Tuesdays for the following astonishment, brought to me by my friend Ben. I (and, quite possibly, you too) have spent my entire life believing that there is only one way to open a banana. I was wrong. Very wrong. Behold, friends:
Who knew? Now you can make that banana soft serve even faster!

Those monkeys are geniuses I tell you! I’m off to go pick nits out of the girls’ hair.
Haha! In middle school, my friend showed me how to open a banana the “real way”–by the back end. I forgot how hard it was to open a banana by the stem end
oh my god, his pajama pants actually have monkeys on them.
Though I don’t eat bananas (which I hate since I can’t enjoy your soft serve!!!), that is such a cool trick. I think I learned that a while back but never actually did it.
I’ve been living a lie!!
Hi Gena – This is completely off topic and out of the norm for the types of questions you typically answer, but given your profession, I thought you’d be an ideal person to ask for recommendations for summer reading titles. I’m looking for some non-fiction or fiction books with some substance to both entertain and enlighten me during my month long summer break (I’m a teacher.) Have you read any truly great books lately, Gena or anyone? Many thanks!
Chelsea: I would highly recommend :
The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger. I could hardly put it down!
Also, “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom.
Those are two of my favorites.
I actually catalogue my books at http://www.librarything.com (such a cool tool)
There’s a link to my library list on my website: http://www.frontporchyoga.com.
Happy Reading! Grace
Hahaha! I totally love this and will only open bananas from the back end from this day forward.
good to know considering lately i’ve been making your banana soft serve nearly every morning! it MADE the breakfast i posted about this morning. ahh, it’s soooo good!
You have seriously changed my entire life in terms of bananas.
I’ve heard about that…. my nanners are always very ripe and I have no problems peeling the stem away….but how cool is THAT???

ps my whole family ADORES banana soft serve. I add a spoonful of cocoa powder and it’s choco banana heaven!
Thank you; from ALL of us!!!!
Take note of his money pajama pants by the way.
Haha That’s a great video!! I’ve never opened a banana that way either!! I’ll have to try it!

This must be making its way around the ‘net, because my boyfriend just showed this to me the other day! And just to think, my whole life I’ve been opening them the opposite way…Also, I wanted to let you know that I shared your banana soft-serve idea with my assistant who is lactose intolerant, and it just may have changed her life
HAHA seriously I have always opened my bananas from the stem! What a good trick to know! I feel like such a dummy!

Awesome! I will try it with my next banana. Nice monkey shorts Ben.
Ha! No Way! This blows my mind, I love it!
Thanks so much for enlightening us all, I am sure so many are forever grateful for the amazing offerings you have brought with bananas.
You really are changing lives, one banana at a time my dear!
Take care sweet girl.
Who’da thunk it?!? You learn something new everyday.
My dad actually showed me how to open a banana the easy way a few months ago. I’m not sure why he waited almost 40 years…
LOL – too funny how simple it is – and that most of America does it wrong!
Thanks for sharing!!!!
hahhaa I love his Monkey Pajamas. I have heard of this technique before but have never actually tried it!
I am astounded! Who knew?
Too cool!
whaaaat? awesome. i need to go find a banana now.
haha I just heard about this the other day, love the video
I’ve heard that opening bananas this way eliminates those stringy (sorry, no idea what they are!) things too. I’ve never actually tried it though because I thought it would be more difficult. Now I see that’s not the case! Thanks for sharing, Gena!
Crazy! I am SO trying that tomorrow morning.
HAHA! That is soooo awesome. I have to try this!

Yeah! Haha, I saw this video the other day! I was talking about it with my friends and they just gave me this weird stare… =]
I tried it and it’s amazingly easy!
Wow, thanks for sharing Gena! This is quite helpful!
Those monkeys certainly know a thing or two!
The “monkey way” is the only one I know actually… hmmm weird, but then I’m from Europe so maybe that’s the case haha
HAHAH! I absolutely LOVED this! I love his monkey pants – they go perfectly with what he’s talking about
But wow – that’s so funny! I’ve seriously never heard of this!! THANKS BEN!
I have to admit, I felt a little dirty watching that video…
But it’s handy!
Haha wow – I’m totally trying that way with my next banana!
Gena, thank you for sharing this video, I cannot tell you how many bananas I have made mushy while trying to open them, this is great to know!!
wow. who knew? its a sad day when we are learning basic survival tips from monkeys…

That is awesome! And I especially that he is wearing monkey PJs.
Gena:
What a fun break to a pretty boring Tuesday. I made my husband watch it last night and he tried it out this morning! I am so teaching that my third graders when we return to school in September.
Oh my gosh, my husband just shared this with me the other day. How ironic. Banana peeling instruction in monkey pajamas – what a way to get your message heard!
lv lv
THAT IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!! I can’t wait to get a banana and try it!
that’s AWESOME!! hahaha I love it and I’m about to peel my banana that way.
Huh! Who knew? I’m gonna have to try that.
haah love that!
Brilliant!
Hehe, lovely. I’ve always found the monkey method is easier though some of people I know open banana on the opposite side
Brilliant. Nice PJs.
Very cool, thanks for sharing!
Oh my goodness, Gena-this food looks soooo delicious!!! ESPECIALLY your guacamole! I am so impressed – it looks beautiful and it’s definitely making my mouth water!
Oh crap- I think I commented on the wrong post. I meant to comment on the one where you describe how to serve simlpe, delicious raw foods at a dinner party! haha sorry!
Hey I saw this recipe and thought of you. It sounds awesome!
BRAZILIAN VANILLA ICE CREAM
Ready in 5 minutes • Makes 2–4 servings
INGREDIENTS:
• 2/3 cup raw, unsalted Brazil nuts
• 6 Medjool dates, pitted
• 1/2 cup water
• 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
• 20 medium-sized ice cubes
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a blender mix nuts, dates, water and
vanilla. Blend on high until smooth. Add ice
cubes and blend until smooth. Serve
immediately.
*You can use vanilla bean for the vanilla flavor
I ALWAYS open my bananas that way…People give me crap for it but I can’t do it from the other side!
Oh my goodness, I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time! This cracks me up. I had a chance to try it out a couple times to day when my own little monkey demanded some “nanas.” Thanks for sharing!
haha omg that is unbelievable that i’ve never even THOUGHT to do it that way!
How did I never discover this?
Outdone by a monkey…for some reason I don’t think this is the first time in my life…
I opened my banana that way today! Did you know that monkeys also eat their bananas like gentlemen?
I have frozen bananas just to make your banana soft serve. I totally forgot that I put them in the freezer the other day. Now I know what I am going to be having for dessert.
Surprisingly, this is how people open a banana in Iran. The whole country knows how to open a banana properly – something I never knew!
HAHA I saw this the other day! Definitely going to make the soft serve process quicker!
Who knew? Thanks for sharing Gena!
Yea, I finally have been able to see the video on my computer (it was visible before for some reason). This is amazing. Can’t wait until my bananas are ripe and I can give it a try.
SO funny that you would post this because I just heard about this a couple weeks ago! My husband said a woman at work saw some show about it (maybe on Animal Planet?) and said humans open bananas the wrong way! He said she brought in a huge amount that day and the whole day was teaching people how to open them like the monkeys do! LOL!
