Because it’s the Weekend.

Hi folks!

First of all, thanks for an overwhelmingly positive response to my post on the Farm Sanctuary! I hope you didn’t see that headline and think I was abandoning veganism :) No, no. Just refining my position. In a good way.

I’m short on time this week, so I hope you’ll all bear with me as I struggle to share some meaningful posts. In the meantime, let’s start our weekend off on a sweet note, shall we? This little treat is a bit belated, I know; since the banana soft serve craze that swept through the food bloggie world this summer, variations and additions to the basic recipe have become par for the course. But since I’ve never shared the chocolate variety on the blog myself, and since food porn is a good thing regardless of its redundancy, I present to you chocolate banana soft serve.

No recipe, really: just add two tablespoons of a fine quality (I like raw cacao from Navitas Naturals, or Green and Black) cocoa powder, and add it to the original soft serve recipe.

Take a cue, too, from other blogs! I’ve seen various fruits (raspberries, strawberries, mango), raisins, cacao nibs, dates, walnuts, flax, nut butters, and a zillion other varieties. Sure, temperatures are dropping, but who cares. Dessert this good defies the season!

I hope you all begin your weekends on a sweet note. On the agenda for the next two weeks:

  • Raw Question of the Week
  • A special raw dessert treat to savor
  • How to survive Thanksgiving as a vegan/vegetarian/healthy eater if your family is giving you grief

And — get excited –

  • A high raw, all vegan Thanksgiving menu for you and yours!

xo

Yum! I just made some soft serve yesterday. Your post just inspired me to get the carob powder I’ve been eyeing but didn’t know if I had a use for! :)

Looks decadent! Your banana soft serve inspired me to make a drinkable variety – I just put the frozen bananas, cold almond milk, and a little melted dark chocolate in the blender. This is my favorite drinkable dessert, thanks for the inspiration!

That soft serve looks amazing! I really love the contrast between the blue bowl and the chocolate. Not sure if you meant it to be so pretty but it is! ;) Very excited for the Thanksgiving post. I think I’m going to make a vegan treat for Thanksgiving and see how many people eat it (and then look at me in disbelief when I tell them it’s vegan)! Loved the farm post too. So beautiful!

The only thing that would make that delicious banana soft serve even better is CHOCOLATE! Thank you for another great idea.

Can I get a ‘HOLY YUM’?!?!?! Oh yes.

Good luck with the busyness! Sorry that I’m part of that schedule, haha ;)

I never get tired of banana soft serve food porn. :) I have yet to make it, though! I don’t know if I can stomach it in the cold, lol.

Can’t wait for your Thanksgiving menu + raw dessert recipe! :D

I can’t believe I haven’t tried that yet! I have banana ss at least once a week, but usually it’s plain. I’ll be making this next time for sure!

Hey Gena!

I have a question-what is the difference between cacao and cocoa powders? I’m always confused by this! When I was at a whole foods, all they had was $16 Navita’s Cacao Nibs, and then there were some Green + Black’s cocoa powder with the hot chocolate/baking ingredients. Which is more worth it? Or is it better to order in bulk online? Is cacao raw and cocoa not raw? I’m so lost!

Thanks for the choc softserve. I have tweaked, relayed, and parlayed the 2 frozen banana concept. And although I love chocolate, I have to say, the good old fash vanilla (banana) is my fave. I liberally add vanilla extract.

Cocoa powder…you’re gonna think I am nuts, and it’s clearly not raw. But. Green & Black’s and Navitas are awesome, but I actually find that the store brand of grocery stores, in my case it’s Albertson’s, has amazing cocoa powder for like 2 bucks for a huge can. Again, not as status-ey as Navitas or G & B, and not raw, but I actually prefer. Just my random fact of the day.

Happy weekend, Gena!

yum! I just bought some carob powder, so I think I’ll be trying that. It’s funny about your last post title- I assumed it meant you wanted us to all reconsider/consider veganism for Thanksgiving- like trying to get our families not to buy turkey (I’d never win that one). At least there are 3 other vegetarians around our table on Thanksgiving! We always have tons of delicious cooked veggies.

Oh hell, you should hear the Thankgiving talk we had going on at our house today. I said something about not looking forward to a dead animal carcass sitting on the table, and Pea Daddy said, “It’s Thanksgiving!” He’s not eating it or anything, but was defending it nonetheless. Someone is about to get another showing of “Meet Your Meat” again.

hi Gena,
I’m just wondering how much avocado is it ok to eat per day? Thanks.

Reply

Gena November 14, 2009 at 6:01 pm

2-3, depending on the person, but I’d say that 2ish is great for most.

Reply

Kim November 15, 2009 at 6:39 pm

Wow, 2-3 avocados sound a lot. Although it’s the healthy fat, isn’t that a little too much? Thanks for your input.

Reply

Gena November 16, 2009 at 9:23 am

Nope. Absolutely fine, Kim.

First of all, the chocolate banana soft-serve looks awesome….that’s next on my BSS list. I usually just make the regular.

Second…can’t wait for the Thanksgiving menu. I’m going to my usual T-giving party with friends who are absolutely NOT vegetarian-friendly, so I have a feeling that I’m going to have to bring plenty of my own stuff…

:)

Am I the last person in the world who needs to sample a cup of the famous banana soft-serve?! And a little chocolate never hurts… So, despite the falling temperatures outside, a frozen treat will soon be savored.

Can you make this with a Vita-Mix? I don’t have a food processer… (fingers crossed).

Mmm, mmm! This post so made me crave some banana soft serve. So I made some and added in chocolate powder, it was delish! I’ll probably have some more tomorrow. (:

Looks awesome Gena! Makes me want to make some ice cream right now…This is the recipe I love to make with a few simple superfoods in it but it really turns out like chocolate ice cream, especially if you have a vitamix! Raw ice cream is always a perfect treat, even in the winter :)

I never get tired of that soft-serve. I guess that’s why I eat it almost everyday, regardless of the temp outside. Yum!

CHOCOLATE ‘soft serve’!!!

Mad, you’ve gone mad I tell you! :)

Another great idea, I’m excited to test it out. And there might need to be cashew/hazelnut butter involved. Ohhhh yumm.
