  1. Omg the seed wrap!! I do hope he let’s you in on his secret :)

  2. Omgosh Gena that wrap looks incredible. I really hope he tells us how it’s done!!

  3. thanks for such a great article! i’m so pleased there is another raw vegan restaurant that focuses more on veggies and less on oils and nuts. can’t wait to pay a visit to sproutcraft. the wrap looks amazing! and i’m crazy for chili.

  4. Great interview and review! I just had lunch there this week (so close to my work!) And it was awesome. So hard to decide, I wanted everything on the menu! Their shakes are to die for as well. Yum!

  5. I look forward to trying out SproutCraft when I come to NYC in January. I’m thoroughly impressed by the folks who own it just by reading your interview and by reading about their philosophies! Awesome stuff.

“To me, the operative word in “waited on” is “wait.” I hate waiting for food to arrive. I’m also a picky eater, who often wants food modified to suit my tastes, which means that I hate feeling as though I’m driving a waiter crazy with my various demands. ”

    To ME as well :-D

  6. First of all, could you, Cassie, and Kristen be any more beautiful?! I blame the raw food :)

SproutCraft looks awesome! I also really hate to be waited on. I much prefer places where I can watch my food being prepared — even if it is a setting where I trust what’s in it (raw/vegan/organic/etc), I hate waiting and I hate putting my meal into the hand’s of someone else.

A visit to NYC is long, long overdue for me, so when/if I make it up there, I’ll be visiting those guys. I love their food philosophy!

  7. I wish there were places like that here. I think we have maybe one raw restaurant. And it’s a good 30-40 miles from me.

  8. Everything looks so delicious! You are so lucky to live where you do :)

  9. omg. ok, this is literally a 5 minute walk from my apartment. i don’t know how i haven’t heard about it before, but yay!

i really love how they’re part of a traditional cafe – you’re right that it’s a genius way to expose omnivores to vegan food. wonderful! and the fact that they build their dishes with an emphasis on vegetables is just the way i like it.

that’s the first time i’ve heard that vonnegut quote, and i think it quite eloquently sums up my entire philosophy on food. really wonderful interview gena!

  10. oh yum that looks really good. When you hear of a similar restaurant in Santa Barbara, let me know!

  11. Tammy

    That seed wrap looks awesome!

  12. Oh how I long to be back on the east coast. That seed wrap. To Die For.

  13. What a great review (and yummy meals!). I am going def. check this place out! That wrap looks fab! Have a nice weekend! XO!

  14. YUM! You look radiant and that food looks AMAZING! I’ll have to go when grad school is in a lull. I’m 40 minutes outside Manhattan.

  15. This sounds like a beautiful place: in philosophy, in practice, in atmosphere and food presentation :) thank you for the review! I also like their focus on vegetables as opposed to nuts and oils. I feel like that’s quite rare among other vegan and raw restaurants. And it’s not as if that’s a negative thing, I just know personally that too many nuts and oils are enough to make me feel heavy after a meal not light and energetic. It seems to be amazingly inviting to raw foodists and raw amateurs alike, I even think my omni boyfriend would enjoy it! I cannot wait to come home over my break in November and stop by.

  16. Wonderful post – enjoyed the interview very much, these guys are eloquent. The only thing I didn’t like – I am way too far away from NYC! But it gave me hope, that the future holds more of this philosophy, dedication, knowledge, and generousity, for ALL of us. Well done.

Oh you ARE lucky to live in such a city! In Milwaukee the attitude is “the more food for the price the better”. So, sure you can get a meal of an appetizer, entree, soup, dessert and a drink all for under $10 – but to get that price it’s, of course, all processed crap. People in my town are just slow to understand that there’s a high price to pay for that low priced bargain meal. We have -NO- 100% vegetarian restaruants in Milwaukee. Even our local health food co-ops have meat (albeit free range/organic) on the menu. Sad, just sad. So, Lucky you!!

  18. Obviously I’m dying to go. Not so convenient to work, though! Boo on that, though I guess one could argue that it’s on my way home.

I like their approach to the dishes they prepare. Like obviously the dishes at Pure and whatnot are gorgeous and take days to make and all that, but it seems like SproutCraft strikes a nice balance between something you might make for yourself at home and something that’s just special enough to make a trip to a restaurant worth it.

  19. Lovely post, Gena! Great interview score!

I have to say I am kinda disappointed in the raw food or even vegan food scene (that’s not soy/tempeh/seitan based!) outside of NYC! Living in So Cal for 6 yrs, you’d think there was a thriving scene. In LA to an extent there is, but not in the OC or in San Diego and it wasn’t cool. And now in Phoenix, there is even LESS if that’s possible. Even Kristin will vouch that Phoenix is not a mecca for even organic food in restaurants (her newsletter yesterday just touched on that!).

Anyway long way of saying I am envious of you that not only do you have Liquiteria and Pure and the take out cafes but you have cool quaint places like this. Sigh.

Will you be my raw tour guide if I come for a visit? I need a chaperone so that I just dont belly up to the Pure Dessert Bar.

    xoxo

  20. i covet the seed wrap as well. that alone is worth visit if my tastebuds do not deceive me!

  21. Gorgeous and I just loved the philosophy behind their restaurant. Yet one more reason I am jealous of your location! Have a great weekend, hon!

  22. Julia

oh my gosh all of this looks amazing! next time I’m in NY I’m definitely going.

  23. The vegetable nori roll looks amazing, glad to see more dining out options!

  24. i am putting sproutcraft on the top of my list for places to go next time i’m in nyc! cheap-organic-sustainable-raw-not nut heavy???? i am SOO down! how awesome! i hope those guys do well!

    and that wrap looks unbelievable!!

    can’t wait!

  25. Kim

i’ve on that restaurant’s facebook and I’m also looking forward to try it out. Not sure if they’re opened during the weekend…

  26. Great post!!! This makes it even more difficult to not to just fly up to NYC tomorrow. :) When I visit there again I am going to have to stay for at least a week to get all these great restaurants a try. LOL> I am the same way about eating out… though I do not mind too much waiting for the food… it is really how I am so picky about my foods that I always feel so bad about. I do not like causing any scenes. I always get things just plain because I am scared of what might be hidden inside of things. All their food looks yummy! I can’t wait to try one day!

  27. what a thoughtful well-written review!
i havent been to the new location yet; i will soon!

  28. What a cool place! Those sandwich wraps look deliciously seedy and wonderful.

  29. Ada

Wow, everything you ordered looks amazing. I have a quick question, I’m deciding which vegetarian, vegan, or raw restaurant to try for my birthday next weekend and I was wondering which was your absolute favorite. So far the general consensus seems to be Pure Food and Wine, but I was curious as to your opinion. Thanks!

  30. This place sounds almost too good to be true! As someone who REALLY wants to relocate, you sure are making a great case for New York. Now if only I can find a job there…

Thanks for the interview, review, and drool-worthy food photos!

  31. I saw this place in time out a few weeks ago, i keep wondering whether i can make it there and back on my lunch hour. hmmmm why aren’t nori rolls available everywhere? alas

  32. this post was so fun!! the food looks wonderful
hope your weekend has been relaxing and enjoyable!

im giving you a shout out in my next post!!

  33. It’s not too often that I’m thoroughly inspired, but you make a very good (and inspiring!) point about living in a city that has many raw vegan restaurants. I need to get out and check out the ones here in L.A., as there are many and it’s time that I go there and check them out! I love how thorough your review was! With the website’s content and the pictures of the guys behind the counter! If I lived in NYC, I’d be hitting them up tomorrow!
Awesome, well-written review! Love your blog, through and through, by the way.
P.S. Please tell your friend I love her striped pants. So cute.

  34. Oh! Those were good times!!! I loved their kim chi… it’s my favorite ever. Remember I had three bowls in a row? LOL!

    XOXO,
    Kristen

  35. I wish there were more raw restaurants near me. You’re so lucky.

By the way, I saw your comment in VegNews. I was like, “hey, I know who that is.”
