Guest Post on Oh She Glows

by Gena on June 6, 2009

Hey all!

I just returned from a decadent, multi-course, ridiculously tasty meal at Pure Food and Wine. And for once, guys, I actually got a photo of every single dish! So expect a seriously mouth-watering food porn post tomorrow. In the meantime, I thought I’d share the guest post I have up on Oh She Glows this evening. If you all haven’t checked out Ange’s beautiful and thoughtful blog, please do! Ange is one of the most spirited food bloggers out there, and I’m honored that she chose to have me as a guest during her vacation.

The post is a re-cap of my journey to raw foods and a general primer on getting started with the raw diet: for those of you who are new to my blog, I really encourage you to check it out! And let me know what you think.

I’m hitting the hay early so that I can have a full birthday celebration tomorrow. Night all :)

xo

Hi there Gena, I just read your guest post on Angela’s blog – awesome, insightful, as always! :D Good news = I’m incorporating more and more raw food into my life! Can I ask you some question again? (sorry!)

1) What do you think of grapeseed oil? or what is the best ‘oil’ out there in the market – I don’t cook with oil, but I noticed some of your recipe asked for olive oil.

2) could you please do a post on food that are commonly mistaken as raw? ie oatmeal/steel cut oats/ are canned beetroot raw?/rice? AND also what foods can be (safely) eaten raw.

Thank you so much for your help, Gena!! I always appreciate it!! :D

Hey Cecilia!

Nice work on more raw foods!

As to question #1: Favorite oils are flax and hemp and olive; coconut oil is great; grapeseed is fine, too. Just make sure they’re cold pressed.

#2: I’ll try to do a longer post. But obviously, anything you cook on a stovetop, such as rice or oats, is not raw. Canned beets have always been flash cooked and aren’t raw either (this goes for all canned veggies, which I don’t recommend in general).

Oh ALSO ALSO … (hah! you just can’t get rid of me, can you?!) ;)

3) I live in a Perth, Australia … availability of organic foods are slowly on the rise, do you think it’s worth purchasing vegetable/fruit rinser?

Thank you once again!!!! <3

Cecilia,

No way. Just rinse with water! Anything you can remove is removable with water and a touch of hydrogen peroxide if you want; the rest, sadly, will have penetrated the vegetable. But if you can’t get organic, it’s not the end of the world.

Hi Cecilia,

I am in Perth also and have found some great spots for organic shopping. Email me at casey@caseylorraine.com if you need some ideas.

Hi Gena,

I just discovered your blog through Oh She Glows, and I’m loving it. It’s definitely inspired me to incorporate more raw foods in my diet. I think the best thing is your flexible attitude about eating raw; that makes it feel much more inclusive for those of us who are new to it.

i just read your guest post, and i have to say i really appreciate you for being open about your journey to raw. mine was/is similar, so it was really nice to read, for lack of a better word. also, before i found this blog, i was getting annoyed at the all or nothing attitude towards raw eating that seemed to be everywhere, since my philosophy with raw foods is very similar to yours. thanks!

That’s a great post Gena – well written as always :)

I really appreciate how you explain this way of living. As per something you said to me before, last night I had the opportunity to talk with others about this lifestyle and by being warm and open about my own journey, they were honest about their experiences also. Another friend recently asked if she could talk to me about this lifestyle, having had no joy from increasing the amount of time she spent in the gym. I will be sure to pass on your web address to her.
