Hippocrates Health Institute Video Giveaway

by Gena on July 11, 2010

Every now and then, a fellow blogger will graciously give away some of his or her cookbooks in an effort to downsize. I’ve got a habit of hoarding keeping cookbooks, so you won’t see me donating them anytime soon, but I am far more generous with my video collection.

Some time ago, a dear friend gave me an almost complete series of video lectures from the famous Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida. This health resort is often known as the throne of the live foods movement; they make supplements, educate interested people in the nuances of sprouting, and offer their own health practitioner certification course.

The video lecture series covers all of the basics of the Hippocrates brand of a raw foods lifestyle: a very detailed account of food combining, supplements, fasting, detoxification, and so on. They’re inspiring and positive, and they’ll certainly make any rawcurious viewer even more motivated to explore! I will offer a full disclosure: these videos aren’t really copacetic with my own practice of a semi-raw life. For one thing, they’re geared toward people who eat, or wish to eat, close to 100% raw. For another, there’s a spiritual emphasis in the language that I don’t relate to. Most of all, I don’t agree with a number of the practices discussed (such as fasting and the systematic use of home enemas), and in fact I think that they can be hazardous when practiced by people who are interested in raw foods for the wrong reasons (for example, unnecessary weight loss).

Still, it’s always valuable to explore viewpoints that are different from our own, no? And while I don’t agree with much of what’s taught at Hippocrates, I do admire and support their longstanding efforts to promote good health through the teaching of raw and vegan dietary principles. There’s no doubting that Hippocrates is a formidable institution, and I think that anyone who wishes to explore a more exclusive brand of the raw lifestyle should check the videos out!

Lecture 1 - Principles of Health: A brief history of how Hippocrates came into being. A comprehensive explanation of the food groups in the Living Foods diet.

Lecture 2 – Internal Awareness: The basics of the digestive / eliminative system and how to detoxify.
Instruction on the proper way to use enemas and implants.

Lecture 3 – Supplements, Algae, Herbs, and Homeopathy: A guide of the diffrerent acailable supplemtents and their benefits. Also alternative opinions to complete the needed consumption that our human body requires.

Lecture 4 – Ancient and Current Self-Help Techniques: Many helpful healing techniques that can be done at home. For challenges of cuts, burns, impaired vision, infection, pre-mature gray hair, and many others. These time-tested remedies are at your fingertips.

Lecture 5 – Fasting on Liquid Nourishment: The benefits of fasting on green juice rather than water. A review of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual benefits of fasting.

Lecture 6 – Questions and Answers I: Questions on the science, psychology, and food of the Living Foods Lifestyle. The responses provide clear and thoughtful information.

Lecture 7 – Detox and Elimination: The workings of the elimination systems (Lymph, Liver, Lung, Kidneys and Skin) and your bodies’ reactions to a detoxifying program).
View in English

Lecture 8 – Practical Living: How to really live the Hippocrates Lifestyle when you return home. How to have what you need at home, work, and in social situations.

Lecture 9 – Questions and Answers I: Questions of the participants are posed. The responses provide clear and thoughtful information.

Lecture 10 – Bringing it all Home: The physical, emotional and spiritual healing process. How to achieve your highest goals in life. Applying the Hippocrates lifestyle at home.

Lecture 11 – Food Combining: Proper combining of foods for good digestion. Foods that should never be eaten together. Key information for optimal health.

Here they are, having lived a nice life on my shelf, right next to season 4 of The Wire (takes a moment to bow head in solemn reverence for the greatest show of all time).

Hmmm. According to my home video library, I’ve got rather eclectic tastes.

In two weeks (that’s July 25th), I’ll announce the winner of this 11-video set.

To enter

  1. Leave a comment on this post telling me which of the videos would interest you the most, and/or
  2. Tweet the following: “check out @choosingraw’s Hippocrates Health Institute video giveaway! http://bit.ly/aMBGiC” and then comment to tell me that you did.

Gooood luck!

These all sound awesome, but I’m particularly interested in #3 – Homeopathy! My mom practices homeopathy and her remedies always work better for me than anything any of my doctors have said ;) #4 sounds really good too… actually all of them sound good :)

I would be most interested in Detox&Elimination or Food Combining. They are both topics that I have been interested in learning more about this summer. I recently transitioned into a vegan, semi-raw lifestyle and the digestion problems that have plagued me for the past three years are basically healed! Super exciting. Your blog has been a great source of information for me during the transition, so thank you!

I’d love to see Lecture 3, mainly for the herb parts. I’ve been getting into TCM a lot lately and it’s impressive seeing what those doctors do with just a bagful of herbs.

Wow, this is great! i would like the food combining or the detox video. I know food combining worked for me and would love to focus on that.

I am most interested in Lecture 10, Bringing It All Home. In the interest of ensuring the info is available to the largest possible audience – I would like to donate the materials to the Nashville Public Library. If the library is unable to provide assurance that they would add it to their collection (in some cases – they sell materials that they feel wouldn’t be a good addition) – I would like to donate them to our local raw food meetup. You’ve made a really nice offer – good luck with your contest!

I think that I would be most interested in #’s 8 and 10 although they all sound very helpful, as a vegetarian with a vegan partner we try to live a healthy lifestyle including a raw diet as often as possible.

Reply

Lauren July 12, 2010 at 1:52 am

I’m interested in all of them! But I’ll say 4, 7, or 11 all look very interesting to me. Food combining is something that has always been recommended to me, but I’m never able to do it 100% right, or I get too obsessive with it and it stresses me out which just makes my stomach/digestion worse. So I need to understand it better, calm down, and take an easier approach.

Reply

Mel July 12, 2010 at 2:09 am

All of the videos sound worth watching, however number 7 (Detox and Elimination), would be the most interesting to me :) Thanks for having this giveaway!

I am really interested in Lecture 4: Ancient and Current Self-Help Techniques. I sounds extremely compelling!

Reply

Marina July 12, 2010 at 2:45 am

I’m most interested in the practical living video. As a 16 year old healthy, semi-raw vegan I sometimes find it hard to juggle social situations with a diet as specific as mine. I also tend to eat less veg when I don’t have a lot of time on my hands. I could definitely use more creative ideas so I don’t end up neglecting my social life or my healthy lifestlye. The other ones sound great too :D

As much as I’d like to win, I have to say that the idea of donating ‘em to the library is a fantastic idea and would probably benefit the largest amount of people.

I’ll be most interested in Lecture 10 – Bringing It Home. I’m truly curious if their advice would be practical and socially viable.

I often read about bringing your own dressing to restaurants as a way to be 100% raw which I personally cringe at so out of morbid curiosity, I would really like to find out how a revered organization such as Hippocrates would dish out tips on how to be as raw as possible in daily life. ;-)

Hi Gena, Thanks for holding this giveaway. I’d be really interested in lecture 3, Supplements, Algae. Herbs and Homeopathy. I’m a student naturopath and herbalist and often feel that the naturopathic and the herbal approaches tend to differ in several key ways so I’m always looking at ways of combining them into a more united whole to give clients the best opportunities for healing. The internal Awareness DVD about the workings of the digestive system etc looks interesting too!

In addition, my acupuncturist and I have had many many talks about my need to detox my liver, so this would be a great resource. Hi Gena! My mother went to Hippocrates Health Institute almost 5 years ago now, and she bought all the DVD’s. I agree with what you said, and when watching, what I had to be careful about was that before I was more secure in my eating habits, I felt that I needed to follow their recommendations 100% and that can be overwhelming since they do promote more of a strict way of eating. Great information though!

Reply

Lauri July 12, 2010 at 1:04 pm

It all looks so informative. I’ve hit my one year anniv. on the Raw and starting to hit my stride with it. It’s such a big thing to wrap ones mind around. So the info on these DVDs would be such a BIG leap in my motivation to keep going. But I think #8 and #11 speak to me the most. . . I still have lots to detox, and I’m working on the practical ways to live this lifestyle.

Keep up your AWESOME Blog! Thanks Me!

Casey July 12, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Gena!

I tried your banana softserve (BSS) this morning. Oh. My. God.
It is so good and decadent and simple. It shocked me how good it was.
So, a word of caution that you’ve probably already figured out. I tried adding frozen peaches to the banana in my second batch and it completely changed the texture dramatically, (for the worse, too watery and not creamy and dense enough).

Word to the wise: keep it simple with the BSS. Just bananas. Then add stuff later, like toppings.
Strawberries on top were nice. A touch of vanilla extract was nice too.
But the plain version was simply divine (and the best!).

I am going to make it again tomorrow morning. Add toppings like a regular sundae. Any topping ideas?

Thank you for the inspiration!

Oh gosh…it is hard to pick one that would be better to have, they all seem so intreging. I suffered from food confusion for most of my life. I had an eating dissorder throughout my years in high school and could not see myself to saftey and happiness until I started understanding how to live on a healthy and pure diet. I became vegan three years ago which marked the beginning to my recovery away from anerexia and into healthy eating. It has been a very long journey but I am healthy and fit and loving life. I am a gluten free vegan that stays away from soy and incorporates a large amount of my diet into raw foods. I am still educating myself on nutrition, and the more resources the better! That is why I love blogs such as yours that keeps my knowledge up to date on how to eat nutritionally. If I had to pick one of the dvds, although they all sound great…I would go with Internal Awareness.

Hi Gena,

I discovered your blog a few months ago and I went back and read every post since the beginning. You write beautifully and cover a wide range of topics. I’ve tried a number of your recipes and all of them have been fantastic. I also have a background in nutritional counseling and currently work with patients at a Chiropractor’s office in VA. I have always been interested in raw foods but more so lately. It’s been fun to expand my horizons as they say…. Anyway, my reason for the post is that I have been intrigued by the work of Ann Wigmore and the HHI for years and have always wanted to attend a weekend or week-long program, but time and money haven’t allowed for it to date. I read their magazine and have checked out their website but find them kind of secretive. Access to the videos would allow me to view and learn more about their programs without having to attend! I’d love to glean from the videos what I think would work for my clients (and myself) knowing that I probably also won’t agree with everything they promote. I know they have helped a lot of people with serious health issues, and I’ve love to learn more about their approach. Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this give away!
