  1. Thanks Gina! I’m hoping to one day get a VitaMix…I’ve sampled enough soups/smoothies at Costco by those guys in headsets to know that they are the best!

What brand of mandolin do you have? I have a Cuisnart one, which I am sorry to say, is completely worthless!

    • Hey Sarah!

I have a cheapo mandolin I bought at Zabars here in NYC — I don’t even remember the name, but it’s quite good! Not the fanciest, but sturdy.

      xo

  2. Another fantastic post, Gena! While I would love to have a VitaMix and a dehydrator (I am a glutton for new kitchen appliances), I think I would get more use out of a juicer at this time so I’ll be investing in that first.

  3. hey gina!
thank you for the wonderful information!
i really want to get all of the appliance. I will probably get them when i become older and have settled with a stable job. as for now, i’m a poor college student living near campus with sister. haha, can’t really afford them or the space to have them.

btw, do you think you could have your posts sent to email? I would love to receive your posts through email if it’s possible. :)

    • Hi Junghwa,

Alas, I’m not sure how to set that up! But I’m starting a newsletter soon for my clients, I hope, so I will keep you posted on it.

      Gena

  4. I’m so hoping to get a Blendtec soon!!! I want all of those soups and smoothies to turn out perfect.

  5. great post! thanks for answering all those questions i had (and some i didnt know i had)…is it bad im even more excited about being engaged now that i have read this? registry here i come!!!!!!! so excited!!

  6. GREAT post Gena!!! I have been wondering about a lot of these things myself and absolutely love kitchen appliances and tools. I worked at Williams-Sonoma a couple of years ago just for the discount :)

A Vitamix and juicer are on my wish list!!

  7. Justine

Awesome post! Ironically I just bought that juicer & a spiralizer from Amazon. I’m in college though but I’d love to own a Vitamix someday.

  8. Great post! I have been hoping you would do a post like this!

I don’t have a blog (yet) but look almost solely to your blog for my daily healthy and inspiration..you are miracle in my life. I just wanted to echo the request to be sent emails…I think about it every time you post…I think you’d get a lot of subscribers!!!!!!

  11. Thanks for sharing – it’s interesting to consider your perspective!
You have the juicer I’m looking at getting after our move :) We have one version down right now (I think) but want to upgrade from the plastic…
When at the start of your raw journey, did you ever try dehydrate with an open oven? Or are you just now starting to experiment as a dehydrator owner?
    ~ Emily.

    • Emily,

Truth is, I never dehydrated at all! There was nothing that really demanded it. I’m sure I’ll do it more now.

      Hope you’re well~

  12. Gena – is there a specific spiralizer you’d recommend?

  13. Thank you for this info! Now that I have been “juicing” a few times a week, a juicer is probably in my future. :)

Great info Gena. Before I got my juicer (Omega), I was blending everything in my Breville blender. I have the one with the smoothie setting. I’ve read that’s refered to as “pulping”. That worked for me, although, I could have passed on the little tiny pieces of beet that I had to chew! ha ha. I do love my juicer though, and have to say that I’m very glad that I got it.
If I had planned well, I should have just saved for the Vitamix instead of the Breville, because I really want one of those now. Maybe some day….

  16. Great info – thanks!!! I’m not raw but I do try to eat 2-3 raw meals a day and I’ve found that my food processor is my #1 needed kitchen appliance to do so. I love making spreads and pate’s with it. I also love making smoothies and used to use my food processor for those too but then started to notice more wear and tear on my processor (and what a mess to clean up every time) so I finally purchased a high-speed blender (blendtec). Soooooo glad I did! Worth every penny, use it every day. It is my #2 kitchen appliance.

  17. hmmm I really think I need a way to have daily access to affordable juice. HOwever, between the mess and size of juicers, I don’t think will be conducive to my communal living situation. tear tear. I think I am going to do a juice bar search for the cheapest and best in the city. that would be a fun post. xoxo can’t wait til tonight, friday and saturday! omg omg and congrats again!

  18. I find I use my Vita-Mix more than my food processor, but that’s probably just because when I started eating vegan, I already had the Vita-Mix but only had a small, half-broken food processor.

Also, I consider my mandolin a necessity. It is so much faster than chopping! It is a small cheap ($12.99) slicer that has a julienne attachment. It gets used as often as my Joyce Chen spiralizer.

I use my dehydrator weekly (hopefully more often when I starte getting more fresh produce from my garden and trees) because my sprouted dehydrator bread is pretty much the only bread I eat now.

And, I’m counting the days until Christmas (not literally) because I’m getting a juicer then. Until then, I’ll just do without.

    • Gena

Great attitude Stacie. And yes, mandolins are awesome. I could live without mine, but it’s a great tool.

  19. Another great and very informative post Gena. I agree with you on the food processor. I find it’s easier to use for certain recipes (not to mention easier to clean) than my Vita-Mix. However, I use my Vita-Mix at least twice, if not three times a day.

I received my Vita-Mix as a Christmas present from my mom, and my boyfriend (now husband) was floored at how much she spent on it, but oh has he changed his mind. He now says that if it breaks after the warranty ends, he will show up at Vita-Mix headquarters with $500 in cash for a brand new one. :)

I am also excited to inform you that I am now the proud owner of a spiralizer, and I can’t wait for you to see what I have on the menu for lunch today. :)

  20. One more dumb question. :)
Do you consider Ezekial bread raw? If so, if you lightly toasted it, would that make it not raw? I have been eating plain lightly toasted Ezekial for breakfast and it has been one of the only things I can tolerate with my current tummy issues. Thanks!

  21. LOVE this post, Gena! And, I’m with you – I’d put a spiralizer waaaaay up on the “Must Have” list before a dehydrator.

I also own a Breville Juice Fountain and recommend it all the time. (I got super lucky and snagged mine for dirt cheap when a local Linens & Things was going out of business.)

Since green juices are really the foundation of my raw foods lifestyle, my Breville gets used every day, at least a couple times a day. HOWEVER, for all your readers who cannot afford or do not wish to invest in a juicer, I hope you’ll let them know that they can still reap the healing benefits of fresh juice by using their trusted blenders and a nut milk bag. Blend. Strain. Drink. Heal. :D

And, for anyone looking for a less costly blender to tide them over until they can afford one of the big guns, I recommend the Oster Fusion. This thing will stand up for even the daily green smoothie drinker. And, at less than $80, what’s not to love?

    • Gena

      Earthmother,

Thanks SO much for the blender tip! I never know which to recommend aside from the Vita.

And I’m glad we’re on the same page so totally about the rest :)
