Southern Comfort

by Gena on May 17, 2009

Happy Sunday, everyone.

It’s been a sleepy, rainy day here in the Big Easy. I woke up and went for a leisurely run in nearby Audobon Park, which is absolutely beautiful. I caught some photos of the foliage, including a fishpond:

Some classic Spanish moss:

A stately, tree-lined running path:

And some of the gorgeous homes on St. Charles Avenue uptown:

There are plenty of things I don’t love about New Orleans: the slow pace, the humidity, and the pervasive bon vivant, drink-till-you-drop attitude, which clashes so profoundly with my own serious streak. But I DO love the history, the music, and the unbelievable architecture. I could stare at these houses forever.

We were all tired of restaurant dining, so we stayed in for dinner tonight. The menu was a smorgasboard of fish, pasta, asparagus, and two delicious and photo worthy salads. The first was a simple mix of raddichio, endive, and arugula (tricolore):

And for me, my massaged kale salad with sweet potato and asparagus. I used purple kale, which was beautiful:

I have to leave for the airport early tomorrow, so I’m hitting the sack right now. I’m so glad that I recovered for this weekend with Chloe and her family. It’s been fun, restful, lively and domestic all at once. I’ll sign off with a photo of my graduate in her garb. God, I’d forgotten how itchy and hot those gowns are.

Wow, lovely pics. Ever since I watched Texas Chainsaw massacre, I’ve absolutely refused to even think of the south. But from what your saying and showing in this post, I think I just might visit when I come to the States :)

Glad you had a good time. I wish you a safe trip back home!

Love,

Tina

It has its ups and downs, for sure. But it’s really lovely and full of character and history, Tina — I recommend it!!

It looks like you had a nice time! I could stare at those houses forever too… and decorate them! I have been going on a decorating spree with my parent’s house in Florida. I guess it gives me something to do.

Anyway, I hope you have a safe flight back! Actually, I might be interning in NYC for the summer. I hope it works out!

Hey darlin!

Sounds like you had an awesome time with your graduate (who totally does that gown justice).

And I just have to say-you write with so much care and effort. I absolutely adore your posts and I get so excited when a new one pops up in my Google Reader!

Quick question-How do you eat the Sweet Potato raw? Do you dehydrate or anything first?

Have a wonderful Monday!

With Love,

Emily

What a wonderful compliment, Emily! I try to write thoughtfully, and I’m glad the efforts come through. I just checked out your blog and can’t wait to explore it!

I steam my sweet potatoes or bake ‘em — I’m high raw, not 100% raw, and they’re one of my non-raw foods!

Ha! The things you dislike most about New Orleans — the slow pace, the humidity, and drink-till-you-drop attitude — are what I like most about the city! I’m fairly certain you have to be a born and bred Southerner to appreciate the humidity. Of course, I also love the architecture, the Spanish moss, and the tofu scramble at Slim Goodies on Magazine Street! I try to head down there every couple years and a trip for me is long overdue. Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Haha. Well actually, I found that the humidity wasn’t so bad this time! I’m always partial to heat over cold, so I’ll take the humidity there over the cold, dry spell we had over the weekend here!

And I just love the character of the place, the history. Laissez les bon temps roulez is right! xoxo

The pics are gorgeous! It is not quite so green in Chicago yet…but sometime soon it will be. We do have tulips on Michigan Ave.

I do have one question for you because I keep running into it. Have you heard of 80-10-10? Do you have any comments about that version of the raw foods diet? Just curious. Thanks! Hope you are having a great day. :)

Hi Elese,

Awesome question.

Short answer: it’s not a diet that does or would work for me, as I’m not a big enough lover of fruit. But it’s a legitimate perspective for those who can make it work.

Long answer: most women, in my view, have a history of yeast (even if they’re unaware) and the sudden incorporation of so much fructose into their diet is likely to lead to problems. So it’s not what I would advocate for your average Jane looking to follow a new regime. I also had some questions and doubts when I read the book the first time, which would have to be the topic of a longer post.

But of course, it’s always all about what works for the individual.

G.

Gena, I love the pics! So glad you enjoyed your stay in NOLA :-) I’ve only visited once, but would love to go back.

I have a question as a follow-up to all the yeast-talk on here: I’ve struggled with skin and sinus allergies for a long time. Could these be a function of yeast over-production? Just curious, because I’d LOVE to get rid of them without popping claritin every day, as I have been. Thanks!
