Why Raw? A Guest Post at Hadley Holistics

Hey guys!

Hope you are all enjoying a good afternoon. Thanks for your kind words about my Summit recap. Please keep reading!

In the meantime, I wanted to direct you all to a guest post I’ve got up on my friend Hadley’s site. Hadley, like me, works professionally to promote healthy living. As a Holistic Health Counselor, she helps clients find balance through nutrition, incorporating a range of Western and Eastern practices. She also shares tasty recipes and useful healthy living tips on her blog!

My post for Hadley answers a very important why question: why raw? My goal in writing the post was to demonstrate that there is a wide variety of motives for pursuing a raw lifestyle. You may think that all foodists eat raw for the same reasons, or in the same way, but in fact there is a tremendous range of raw lifestyles and philosophies. If you’re curious about mine, check it out!

Gena:

Thanks again for breaking it down for new raw foodists. I introduced your blog to my friend this past week and started the conversation about food combining. I passed on a few recipes and she was in heaven. She struggles with digestion problems and is limited in what she can put into her body. She said she felt great all week eating your recipes!!! Yeah (:

LOVE it, particularly this: …the essence of a raw diet: to eat food in its pure, natural state, in simple combinations, without elaborate preparation or seasoning.

Could not agree with you more.

Beautifully put, Gena! I have told lots of friends and family members about your blog when they ask me about my attempt to go high-raw. I can never seem to explain it as well as you do :)

WONDERFUL stances and information regarding raw foods. This is why I am glad that YOU are my counselor – you look at the lifestyle (and everything else) with an objective view and do not look into percentages and all that.

Great article! Food combining was the most positive part of my raw experience – I felt the most significant change just from eating foods that combined well with each other.

Loved the zucchini pasta, by the way :) Great recipes, I will be trying them!

great post! love your focus on digestive health instead of 100% raw. And thanks for clarifying different trends among raw community! :)

Thanks for the enlightening post. After two years of reading others’, Zesty’s presentation at the Summit finally inspired me to create my own blog. Check it out if you have the time, and please keep up the interesting raw material.

Another eloquent, well-structured article. It was a pleasure to read, and had just the right balance of the basics for newcomers to raw food and more detailed elements that even raw aficionadoes might not be familiar with.

Something I would love to read about / see on the blog would be how you find raw food sustains your active lifestyle (I think you mentioned running and yoga amongst other things) incorporated into something along the lines of a ‘day in the life’ post. I’m always intrigued as to how a high-raw diet impacts upon highly active individuals : )

Just a thought though ~ apologies if I was too forward!

No problem, Jessica! I do have an active lifestyle, including some moderate running (think 2-3 miles, 1-2 times a week, at most), some gym-going, and yoga 2-3 times a week.

For now, at least, I’m not going to do a “day in the life” post because I’m a firm believer in not holding up one’s own dietetic or fitness habits up as markers of what others should or should not do. If you don’t mind, I’ll answer this query in more depth as my “question of the week” later this week? Cool?

Of course, I completely understand that sometimes those kind of posts can be misconstrued by some people as a model for what they should do, and I really should of thought of that before asking!

I would be more than happy (in fact incredibly flattered) if you used my query as a question of the week : )

Thanks!

I’m a regular reader of Hadley’s blog and so was excited when I saw you’d be posting over there. It was a great read–definitely makes the raw lifestyle seem super approachable, which not all people manage to do.

I really enjoyed reading your guest post miss Gena! I was just trying to explain to a friend the other day that there are SO many different reasons why a raw lifestyle can be helpful. I’m with ya on not being *too* crazy about exact details, as long as you’re healthy and balanced, the exact guidelines or 100% rawness shouldn’t matter. What a great way to live right? xxox
